EPA Releases the New Source Performance Standards for Commercial & Industrial Solid Waste Incineration Units
Along with the Boiler MACT, EPA also released the final rule on the Commercial & Industrial Solid Waste Incineration Units (CISWI) on February 21, 2011. The big question on most of ECS’ client’s minds is "will this affect my small burn-off ovens"? The answer is NO!
EPA had a touch of common sense and determined that they would exclude the burn-off ovens from their original inclusion in this rule. The bottom line is that by targeting the estimated 88 incinerators in the US, and forcing the big guys to bump up their pollution control equipment, they don’t need to deal with your little burn-off oven.
That’s good news for the rest of the world - maybe not so good for those of you who have any waste incinerated. The cost is estimated at $360 MM to $870 MM. That’s a rather large range in my book! The bad news for anyone having waste incinerated, is the cost will be passed along to you. Start budgeting for a higher fee or start looking harder at recycling options!
