Thinking About ISO 14001? See our list of Frequently Asked Questions.

Is my company too small?
Every company with potential to endanger the environment can benefit from proactively protecting the environment. Putting an ISO 14001 plan into place or an alternate Environmental Management System is a great way to add structure to your corporate vision to maintain regulatory compliance.

Do we really need it?
The primary driver for ISO 14001 and similar Environmental Management Systems has been market-driven. Initially many companies were forced by their clients to put ISO 14001 in place, but then found a number of added benefits they didn’t expect. See “How can it help us?” for some of those unexpected boons.

Can we afford it?
Putting an Environmental Management System (EMS) into place is not just a function of writing a check. While investing monetarily is a major component, time and commitment are actually larger commitments to consider. Hiring ECS to coach and guide you through the process will allow your organization to focus your resources and get the most bang for the buck, time and effort expended.

How can it help us?
EPA’s self-disclosure program for non-compliance actually lists implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS) as one of the nine criterion to be ”forgiven” in the event of a regulatory violation. Companies that already have an EMS in place are a step ahead of the game when submitting their error to EPA and asking forgiveness.

Another of the components of the ISO 14001 or like Environmental Management Systems, is the requirement to conduct regular environmental compliance audits. This creates an automatic check and balance to assure that your organization is meeting all EPA related regulatory requirements. Companies with functioning EMS programs are less likely to have regulatory issues slip up on them because they’re focused on knowing what their obligations are and measuring their success in meeting them.

How do we start?
Start by making a simple phone call to discuss your specific facility and needs. We will assign you one of our experienced ISO consultants most familiar with your type of industry to give you options on how to approach setting up an Environmental Management System.

What resources do we need?
Choosing to design and implement ISO 14000 Environmental Management System (EMS) is not an easy decision for most companies. It takes a lot of hard work and a real commitment to get it done. Environmental Compliance Source can help. Learn how to leverage your resources and get a system that will help your bottom line and competitive position. Yes, even companies with 35 employees can do it.

When you need to KNOW...

  • How are we doing?
  • Is our policy too broad?
  • Are we on the right track?
  • Does this meet the standard?
  • Can we demonstrate conformance?

These important questions are vital to the success of your Environmental Management System (EMS). Don't be intimidated by ISO 14000 or confused about implementation. An independent audit, narrowly focused or comprehensive in scope, can help you measure progress.

For those who already have an Environmental Management System in Place, we offer:

Consultative Assessment for those designing or revamping their EMS program and needing guidance

Gap Analysis for Certification Readiness
Environmental Compliance Audits for Regulatory Compliance

Second Party Audits (in lieu of Internal Audits) for those organizations with inadequate internal auditor resources
